North Cascades Institute

North Cascades Institute is continuing to partner with the US Forest Service in offering two stewardship programs: Eagle Watchers and Mountain Stewards. However, the US Forest Service is the lead organization for the Eagle Watcher and Mountain Steward programs in 2010.

Eagle Watchers
The US Forest Service will be accepting applications for the Eagle Watchers program in the fall of 2010. For more information about the Eagle Watcher program visit the US Forest Service page. You can also visit the Web site for the Wild and Scenic Skagit River.

Mountain Stewards
The Mt. Baker Ranger District is looking for dedicated volunteers to educate day hikers, backpackers and climbers on the three busiest Mt. Baker trail systems: Heliotrope Ridge, Park Butte/Railroad Grade and Heather Meadows. As a Mountain Steward volunteer, you'll receive training in low-impact recreational skills, natural history, and back country management issues. You will then volunteer for three daytime shifts on the trails interacting with the public.

The program runs July 10 – September 12, 2010. Volunteers are expected to attend trainings on July 10 and 17 and commit to a total of three weekend days between July 24 and September 12, 2010. A third optional training will be held on July 24 for Heather Meadow volunteers.

Applications are available here. The due date is June 25, 2010.
