The Photography of Paul Bannick
Whatcom Museum of History and Art, Bellingham
Thursday, November 6, 7–9 p.m.
FREE

Join us in the Whatcom Museum's elegant Rotunda Room for an evening of stunning bird images with Seattle-based photographer and naturalist Paul Bannick as we celebrate the release of his new book The Owl And the Woodpecker: Encounters with North America's Most Iconic Birds. Published by the Mountaineers Books, renowned bird artist Tony Angell writes in his foreword that the book will "continue to provide an example of how the fabric of nature is so carefully and intricately composed and what we might find there if we are willing to look long and deeply enough"

In Bellingham, Paul will treat us to a slideshow featuring compelling images from the book, which profiles all 41 species of owls and woodpeckers across 11 key habitats. Providing an inside look at the intertwined stories of these cavity-dwellers, his presentation will feature familiar birds like the northern flicker and great-horned owl as well as rare ones such as the ferruginous pygmy-owl, red-cockaded woodpecker and northern spotted owl. The images will be accompanied by Paul's commentary distilled from thousands of hours in the field observing owl and woodpecker behaviors. A book signing and reception will follow the slideshow, with healthful catering provided by North Cascades Environmental Learning Center chef, Charles Claassen.

Bannick Paul Bannick is an award-winning photographer, specializing in natural history imagery. An experienced naturalist and outdoor educator, Paul creates many of his images while kayaking, hiking or snowshoeing in the Pacific Northwest. His work has been featured in numerous books and magazines, including The Seattle Times' Pacific Northwest Magazine, Sunset and PhotoMedia, and he is the official photographer for "Birdnote," a popular radio show found on several National Public Radio stations.

You can also join Paul Bannick, along with Benj Drummond and Brett Baunton, at the North Cascades Environmental Learning Center September 19–21 for the 2nd annual Nature Photography Retreat.
