North Cascades Institute invites you to a free picnic barbecue at North Cascades Environmental Learning Center to celebrate more than 20 years of providing environmental education to people of all ages. The Learning Center is nestled on the shores of Diablo Lake, just three hours from Seattle, and surrounded by the pristine wilderness of North Cascades National Park.
- Ramble through the forest with a fun-loving naturalist
- Paddle in the afternoon sun with peaks at every compass bearing
- Listen to live music from Skagit Swings Big Band
- Feast on a picnic barbecue in the Salmonberry Dining Hall featuring fresh and organic ingredients from the region
- Enjoy hands-on art activities for the whole family.

Driving directions
From West of the Cascades take Interstate 5 to exit 230, North Cascades Highway/State Route 20 East. Drive 65 miles to Diablo Dam Road, milepost 127.5. Turn left, drive over Diablo Dam and park at the end of the road in the lot to your right. Estimated time from Seattle: 3 hrs, Bellingham: 2 hrs, Sedro-Woolley: 1.5 hrs.
From East of the Cascades take North Cascades Highway/State Route 20 West. Drive 35 miles west from Washington Pass to Diablo Dam Road, milepost 127.5. Drive over Diablo Dam and park at the end of the road in the lot to your right. Estimated time from Winthrop: 1.5 hrs.
Camping
Make a weekend of it and camp in North Cascades National Park! There are several nearby campgrounds in North Cascades National Park. The nearest one (a five minute drive) is Colonial Creek Campground on Diablo Lake, all sites are first come first served. Newhalem Creek Campground is 10 to 15 minutes away and has limited reservable sites available. See North Cascades National Park Campgrounds.
